When should you book your Newborn Session?
As a experienced newborn photographer I always get asked, when should I book my newborn session? What age is best for the newborn session to take place? I always recommend that the best time to book your session is as soon as possible after you have had your dating scan (12 weeks). We are highly experienced newborn photography specialists, and are in extremely high demand, so often get filled up really quickly. We only take a certain amount of due dates a week so we can be flexible when your little one arrives and schedule a newborn session within the early days. What is the perfect age for a newborn session?
I have been photographing newborns for many years and have found the best age to carry out your session is between 5 and 8 days old. Your baby will still be very sleepy, their feeding already established, their muscle tone is not established so they are still bendy and curly, their skin will be beautiful and clear with no milk spots yet. Also during this period Daddy should still be on paternity leave so can attend the session and we can get some lovely family images of you altogether - if your feeling up to it.
Obviously a 3 day window is not hugely achievable so in reality we recommend under 2 weeks as the perfect time for your session. I do tend to try and avoid under 5 days particularly if baby is breastfed as your little bundle will likely be still feeding lots to establish their eating pattern. I also tend to avoid days 12 to 14 as babies often have a wee growth spurt around then which means lots of feeding again!
Generally I will happily take newborn photos up to around 4 weeks. The older they get the less sleepy they are but up to 4 weeks we can still get lots of lovely sleepy images, sometimes though it will just take a little bit longer.
So to finish up the simple answer to the questions are book your due date in as soon as you can after the 12 week scan and within a day or two of baby arriving get in touch and we will schedule the session for when baby is under 2 weeks.
